About Us
The Ingersoll Goju Ryu Karate dojo was first opened in November of 1989. Our Chief Instructor, Hanshi Isao Yabunka, moved to Ontario to begin a new career with Cami Automotive. Training took place at the Cami Gym for the first 15 years. When the gym was closed, members relocated to the Seniors Centre just across the parking lot. The dojo is now located downtown on Thames Street where a permanent training space has been set up.
The dojo is a not-for-profit organization and strives to provide as many opportunities for members as possible. Jump Start funding is available to students under 18 years old. Many fundraisers and sponsorship events are held throughout the year to provide financial support to elite competitors, continuously improve the facility, and purchase equipment for members to use.
New members are welcome to sign up anytime! The program runs all year long and each student is offered three opportunities to participate in a promotion test throughout the year. New members are encouraged to take advantage of our free trial program before registering.
The dojo promotes a family atmosphere, celebrating everyone's accomplishments and working to achieve goals together. Quarterly birthday and attendance parties are held to recognize hard work put in by the students. An end of the year awards celebration is also put together to showcase the achievement of students both in the dojo and at tournaments. It's also when parents, volunteers, and sponsors are celebrated and thanked for all of their contributions.
